Free Eye Camps a great success!
Ever since its inception Prevention of Blindness Trust (POB Trust), has gained momentum with the aim to provide free diagnosis and treatment of eye diseases. This can be observed with number of camps held by POB in deprived and remote areas across the country and worldwide. The medicines to outdoor patients are given absolutely free of cost. Numerous free spectacles have been distributed to the poor patients. Besides, a large number of cataract blinds are operated upon and implanted with Intra Ocular Lenses (IOL) to restore their vision. Treatments for minor eye ailments are also provided free of cost. Special pre operative and post operative care is taken for patients.
A dedicated outreach team of POB doctors comprising of ophthalmologists and ophthalmic technologists visit the camp. All the patients examined in OPD are provided with medicines, glasses if prescribed whereas the complicated cases are referred to various hospitals. Patients selected for surgery are forwarded to locally established laboratory of POB Trust for investigation, detail preoperative examination, completion of admission process, biometry, pre operative preparation and brought to the fully equipped operation theater established at the camp place for required surgical procedures by POB Trust.
Apart from this, POB Trust has treated more than 470,000 patients and conducted more than 45,000 eye surgeries so far. The POB Trust has arranged, so far, 228 free eye camps in 36 districts of across the country. In addition to this, through 15 free eye camps, around 9 thousands patients have been treated in 12 prisons of Pakistan. Thank God, with support of sponsors, a large number of patients, mostly infirmed, aged and blind for several years due to cataract have received the Gift of Sight.
In a dedicated effort to assist in the restoration of vision, we invite all of you to participate in this beneficial and benevolent effort. We would be very grateful to you sharing with us in this noble cause of serving ailing humanity in restoring sight. It is a matter of great pleasure that due to your collaboration, POB Trust has achieved remarkable success in restoring eye sight. So let not humanity suffer. We invite you to contribute in saving the sight with POB Trust.

It was our first eye camp abroad as well as in Sudan. During this first Free Eye Camp in North Darfur, Sudan in Feb 2005, we met Dr. Najla Mohammad, a local practitioner whose grandmother was suffering from bilateral blindness. The old lady had led an independent and honored life. She was proud to be an earning head of the family. Now the situation was vise versa. For the last 8 years, she was blind. Owing to the poor vision, she could not perform her chore as she did before. The time we met her she was completely blind.
Instead of supporting the family she became a burden on them. This helpless circumstance had caused a great deal of frustration and anger in her. She wanted to do her work by herself but she could not do so rather she had to stay at home most of the time. Consequently, she would get angry quickly. In addition to this, she became a psychic patient. People considered her a mad woman.
The old lady was not ready to come to hospital. She was quite non cooperative and irritable. She had given up hopes for eyesight. Anyhow, we decided to visit her at her hut accompanying Dr Najla. I diagnosed her as a case of bilateral hyper mature cataract and trachoma. After sedating her in the hut, we took her to operation theatre. After completing the preoperative requirements, I decided to operate only one eye of the lady. When I was operating one eye of that lady, Dr. Abrar sitting beside me said,
"You should operate both eyes of this lady as the other eye will also lead to irreversible blindness due to induced Glaucoma after some time."
Technically, both eyes in one sitting are not operated. As a matter of fact, until then, we had no plan to visit Sudan in future. Keeping in view the limited equipments and limited visit, we decided to operate both eyes. Therefore, her both eyes were operated and intraocular lenses were implanted. Next evening, when the bandages came off, she couldn't stop her tears as she saw her grand daughter Dr. Najla after 8 years. She joyfully said,
"I would not describe it as an operation – the doctor performed magic".
She was no more a psychic patient since she had regained her eyesight with the blessing of Allah the Almighty. She can perform her chore herself. Now, she has nothing to worry, nothing to be panic for. This was the only patient in my career who got surgery in both eyes in one sitting. It was remarkable success in my career.

Zolekha, 15 year old Nigerian girl was born blind suffering from bilateral calcified mature cataract. A cataract is the clouding of the eye lens, which if left untreated causes vision impairment and eventually blindness. But she was gifted with outstanding genius. Yet, sometime, melancholy would prevail on her. Her loving father could not see her in gloomy mood.
When her father came to know about the Free Eye camp conducted by POB Trust in collaboration with FIMA Save Vision, he at once brought Zolekha. I operated her right eye first day and left eye on fifth day. When the bandages were removed.
She exclaimed with joy,
“I can see so clearly. I can now do everything easily. I play with my younger brothers and sister and also guide them, as the oldest. Now I want to be an eye doctor.”
She saw first time her parts of body. Her father was deeply moved by this impressive success. He kissed my hands. Later, POB Trust doctors presented gifts to Zolekha. She was very happy with Pakistani ophthalmologists.

12 year old Momin from Nigeria was born blind. Congenitally he was suffering from bilateral cataract. His parents took him to different eye hospitals, but, in vain. They became hopeless and enrolled Momin to religious school for memorization of The Holy Qur’an. When a neighbour informed his father about the POB Trust Free Eye Camp in collaboration with FIMA Save Vision, he rejected the idea altogether by saying:’ it doesn’t work, it’s wastage of time’. On contrary, the neighbour was hopeful and determinate.
He brought the boy to us. On first day, the first eye was operated and on 4th day the other eye was operated. After only two surgery sessions, the world began to "pop out." When the bandages came off he first saw his neighbour standing close to me.
He was so happy that he wanted to return to his home as soon as possible to see all of his family members.
His father said,
I was skeptical at first, but now I am a whole hearted believer in Vision Therapy’.
